It's beginning to seem like last week's rumors are turning out to be true. Gearbox and 2K have just announced a new game to be revealed at the start of Summer Game Fest by launching a new teaser website, and buried in the site's code is a reference to a rumor that surfaced on social media several days ago.
BeChaoticGreat.com promises a "new adventure from Gearbox and 2K" that will be revealed on June 10 at 11 AM PST (2 PM EST). Then if you dive into the site's CSS, you'll see references to Wonderlands, the name of the rumored Borderlands spinoff.
Wonderlands and #BeChaoticGreat sure sounds like Gearbox is leaning hard into the best Borderlands 2 DLC ever made, and perhaps the best DLC for any game, ever. Assault on Dragon's Keep turned Borderlands 2 into a D&D-inspired spinoff where the Vault Hunters all took the role of characters from the fictional tabletop game Bunkers & Badasses. Besides adding a bunch of new items, enemies, and locations, Assault on Dragon's Keep drew praise for adding a serious storyline to Borderlands' often ridiculous plot.
This is just speculation, but Wonderlands might be a fantasy version of Borderlands.
Last week’s rumor said that Tiny Tina will once again be the start of the show while four new heroes will take the place of the standard four Vault Hunters. More will be revealed at E3, which starts on June 12.
Gearbox has already announced hiring for a brand new franchise to launch in 2022, and Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford confirmed it was for "the big one." It's a little strange that an entire game has come from what would have been a great idea for Borderlands 3 DLC, but it's doubtful we’ll see and Borderlands fans complaining.
