If you've been exploring the Sword Coast in Baldur's Gate 3, chances are you've met the Strange Ox. There are plenty of odd and eccentric characters to run into while you play, and many of them have their own secrets, but the Strange Ox in particular is a mystery. Unlike the other cows, he's different and quite rude to you.
If you've spoken to him, you know something is off, but he won't tell you what. As you make your way through the story, he keeps appearing, and eventually, you'll meet him again outside the city of Baldur's Gate. This time, however, he's more willing to talk - he needs your help.
Where To Find The Devilish Ox
In the Druid's Grove, you can encounter the Strange Ox for the first time. He'll continue to make appearances, remaining ominous and vague as to his true identity no matter what you do. Instead, you'll have to wait for Act Three to start before you can make progress on uncovering who or what the Strange Ox is.
Upon reaching Rivington, you'll learn that you have to pass through a checkpoint to reach the lower city. Rather than head straight for the checkpoint, detour towards the Requisitioned Barn. On the cliff overlooking it, there's another barn where the Strange Ox is located.
The ox needs to get into the city, but it's hard to get past the guards when you're as large as he is. Agree to help, and the ox will magically transform into an apple for you to pick up. You'll need to interact with the apple, or it will remain on the ground.
You cannot eat the apple when you consume provisions.
How To Smuggle The Apple Into The City
To complete the quest, you'll need to smuggle the apple into the Lower City. This means getting past the checkpoint in one piece. If you're a druid, you can Wildshape into a cat and sneak on by. You can also use Polymorph to turn into a sheep and waltz past the guards. There are many ways to get past the checkpoint without being arrested.
Once you're past the checkpoint, head past Sharess' Caress to reach the Lower City. Once you enter, you'll receive a notification that the quest is complete. You'll receive a note of thanks and the Shapeshifter's Boon Ring
. It grants the wearer a +1d4 bonus to all checks while disguising or shapeshifting.
You would also receive this ring if you killed the ox in any of the previous encounters with it!
